Your Dog Isn’t “Crazy”
Dog Training
They’re Overstimulated and Under-Enriched
If your dog:
-
can’t settle at home
-
jumps, mouths, or paces nonstop
-
listens sometimes… and completely ignores
you other times
It’s easy to assume they’re being difficult.
Or stubborn.
Or “just high energy.”
But what if the problem isn’t too
much energy…
It’s the wrong kind of energy outlet?
Most dogs we see aren’t just overstimulated.
They’re overstimulated and under-enriched
at the same time.
And that combination is what creates the chaos.

What Overstimulation in Dogs Actually Means
Overstimulation happens when your dog’s nervous system is stuck in “on” mode and they struggle to find their "off switch"
Too much:
-
excitement
-
activity
-
social interaction
-
adrenaline
-
environmental input
…and not enough ability to come back down.
and if we're being honest, finding their off switch is a skill that has to be practiced.
Your dog isn’t just energized, they're an overtired toddler who swears they don't need a nap
and overstimulation = thinking goes out the window.

What “Under-Enriched” Really Means
This is the missing piece most people don’t realize.
True Enrichment isn’t just:
-
toys
-
puzzles
-
quick random bursts of play
True biological enrichment is about:
-
engaging your dog’s brain
-
giving them purpose and autonomy
-
allowing them to explore, process, and think
-
fulfilling their genetic and biological needs as canines
Without that?
Dogs brains and needs are not fulfilled, even if they’re "busy" all day.
So they go looking for stimulation elsewhere, and thats where problem behaviors pop up.

The Overstimulated + Under-Enriched Cycle
This is where things start to click.
When a dog lacks true fulfillment, they:
→ seek out more activity
But the activity they get is often:
-
chaotic
-
repetitive
-
high-adrenaline
Which leads to:
→overstimulation
So now you have a dog who is:
-
constantly “on”
-
never satisfied
-
unable to relax
And the natural response is:
→“they need more exercise”
Which just feeds the cycle all over again.

Signs Your Dog Is Stuck in This Cycle
can’t relax, even when tired
gets more wild after activity, not calmer
constantly seeking attention, stimulation, interaction
reactive or impulsive in stimulating environments
listens inconsistently
seems bored or overwhelmed
frequent nipping, jumping, or begging for attention
“Tired but wired” is the biggest red flag.
Why More Exercise (or Daycare) Isn’t Fixing It
More movement isn’t the answer if the movement isn’t meaningful.
A lot of common outlets:
-
repetitive fetch
-
chaotic daycare
-
nonstop play
-
walking/running multiple miles per day
all of which creates stimulation without fulfillment.
So instead of helping your dog regulate, they:
-
build adrenaline tolerance, meaning more exercise to get "relaxation"
-
rely on constant activity to feel "calm"
-
lose the ability to settle because their brain is always "on"
You don’t get a balanced dog; you get a dog that, is a well conditioned athlete, who needs more and more input to feel okay.

What Dogs Actually Need Instead
Dogs don’t just need to “burn energy" to tire them out
They need:
-
fulfillment (mental + emotional engagement)
-
structure (clear expectations and boundaries)
-
balance (rest sandwich, stimulation → decompression→stimulation)
Most importantly:
They need to learn how to find their off switch and stop seeking out adrenaline 24/7
How we address both sides at TS
At TDS, we don’t just reduce overstimulation.
We replace it with intentional biological enrichment and predictable structure.
That looks like:
-
natural-world exploration (not repetitive high energy environments)
-
guided group experiences
-
opportunities for dogs to think and make choices
-
built-in decompression and rest breaks
-
biologically appropriate activities utilizing their natural instincts
We’re not just tiring dogs out.
→ We’re fulfilling them in a way that naturally creates calm.
What Progress Looks Like
When a dog moves out of this cycle, you’ll see:
-
the ability to more easily settle at home
-
more consistent listening even when excited
-
less reactivity and impulsiveness
-
calmer energy, even after activity
-
more rest and less crashing
Not because they’re exhausted…
→ but because they’re finally feeling regulated and fulfilled.
