Teaching your puppy to "come" but with a twist ;)

Writer's picture: Alyssa Alyssa

"Come" is soOoOo much more than just your dog moving towards you!

Ideally, a great recall looks like:

1️⃣Your dog turns & looks at you

2️⃣Your dog moves towards you

3️⃣Your dog comes all the way into your space

4️⃣Your dog allows you to touch them/their collar

5️⃣Your dog stays near you until you tell them they can leave or you leash them up

This is a pattern that we want to be SO reflexive they don't have to think about any part of it, muscle memory kicks in and they do it - start to finish!

Thats why we practice "come" with our dog away from us (usually sniffing)—not in a sit or down stay staring at us (because when you realllly need your puppy to come? they wont already be staring at you wink wink)

It's why we teach a "collar" as part of the pattern, so they know and expect us to touch their collar or leash them up as the last step of coming when called.

It's why we practice in low distraction areas before we practice in high distraction areas

It's why we practice short distances before long ones

and it's why we make sure we have a GIANT reward history for success

sooooo....

Reward your dog for coming to you! Even if you didn't say come, if they check in with you? Reward them!

Practice set-ups like these every chance you get! It takes 5,000+ repetition to create a reflex, so get practicing 😉
